Untold Story of IVF Invention

After the birth of the test tube baby in 1978, local gynecologists did not believe Dr. Subhas Mukherji’s IVF research and creation of test tube baby. The then West Bengal Government did not recognize his invention, preventing him from attending conferences and stopping him to do further research in IVF. He was insulted, ridiculed, harassed and finally transferred to an Eye Hospital. He committed suicide after being denied opportunities to continue his IVF research. In 1986 a research team in Mumbai headed by T. C. Anand Kumar and his research team created a test tube baby and then were considered as the creator of the first scientifically documented test tube baby in India. However, during a visit to Kolkata in 1997 Dr. Anand Kumar had the chance to examine all research documents of Dr. Subhas Mukherji including his laboratory diaries, research publications and unpublished papers, communications to State Government and  international community, handed over to him by Professor Sunit Mukhopadhyay, collaborator in Dr.Subhas Mukherji’s research. After he critically examined all research documents,  Dr. Anand Kumar proclaimed Dr. Subhas Mukherji as the creator of first test tube baby in India and second in the world, and his techniques being followed in the infertility clinics around the globe. However, Dr. Subhas Mukherji continued to remain neglected in spite of being pioneer in the IVF techniques by at least three years from the rest of the world.
